How to Test Your Swimming Pool Water

How to Test Your Swimming Pool Water

It is hugely important to make sure that your swimming pool is clean with the correct pH and chlorine levels. In addition to this there are also contaminants that you need to look out for such as calcium. If you neglect regular testing you run the risk of severe damage to your pool.

The Importance of Testing Your Water

To avoid any issues with your pool, regular testing, preferably once a week, is fundamental. Otherwise contaminants can build up over time and harm your pool.

Firstly you will need a sample of your pool water. You should use a clean cup, and try to get a sample from as close to the middle of the pool as you can.

You can then test the water with a liquid test kit or with swimming pool test strips.

Testing for Contaminants

Contaminants can build up in your pool over time so it is important to test for them.

Copper Testing

A buildup of copper in your pool water will give it a greenish hue. This can sometimes be caused by copper elements in the pool filter corroding due to low pH levels. To test for copper you will need a copper testing strip.

Iron Testing

An excess of iron in your pool can turn the water brown. Low pH levels can also cause iron to rise. Many copper testing kits also test for iron. For an excess of copper or iron, a metal sequestrant or a metal trap filter can be used as a solution.

Calcium Testing

Too much calcium can cause your water to become cloudy, however if there is too little then your concrete surfaces can dissolve. Most pool testing kits will test for calcium, which should be between 200 and 500 ppm.
